Personal vs Group Boxing Training: Which Is Right for You?

Both personal and group boxing training work — but they work differently. Choosing the right format depends on your goals, your experience and how you like to learn. Here's an honest comparison to help you decide.

Personal training: maximum focus

In one-on-one sessions, every minute is built around you. The coach sees every detail of your technique and corrects it in real time.

Personal training is the best fit if you:

  • Are a complete beginner and want a strong, safe foundation fast.
  • Have specific goals — competition prep, a fitness target, or fixing technique.
  • Prefer a flexible schedule and full, undivided attention.
  • Want the fastest possible rate of technical progress.

The trade-off is cost: you're paying for dedicated, individual time.

Group training: energy and value

Group sessions bring structure, community and a great price per session. You train alongside others at a similar level, which adds motivation and a bit of friendly energy.

Group training is the best fit if you:

  • Enjoy training with others and feed off shared energy.
  • Want a structured program at an accessible price.
  • Are a beginner or youth athlete building general skills and fitness.
  • Prefer a regular, fixed weekly schedule.

The trade-off is individual attention: feedback is shared across the group, so technique corrections are less constant than one-on-one.

You don't have to choose just one

Many athletes get the best of both worlds. A very common and effective path is to:

  1. Start with personal training to build a clean technical foundation and confidence.
  2. Move into group training to keep progressing, stay consistent and train alongside others.

This is exactly how many of my students train — and it works.

A quick comparison

  • Fastest technical progress → Personal
  • Best value per session → Group
  • Most flexible schedule → Personal
  • Most social and motivating → Group
  • Best for absolute beginners → Personal first, then group
  • Best for steady, ongoing practice → Group
